Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Pan’s Labyrinth is best described as an adult fairy tale except in the adult world, kids aren’t so stupid as to eat the grape they were… … mm… come to think of it, they probably would ~ just to be stupidly defiant of the powers that be. Damn kids…

Pan’s tell the story of an underworld princess who wanted to see the world above long long ago. However, the Princess died on the surface, but the king of the underworld knows that she would return to them one day. Fast forward to mid 1900s where Spaniards are fighting some kind of civil unrest, and we see Ophelia arriving in a military camp with her very pregnant mother to greet the commander, Ophelia’s new step father. From the first moment we laid eyes on the commander, we knew him to be an evil man who only cared for himself. Ophelia didn’t cared for her stepfather, nor the military post that they were situated in ~ so when a praying mantis showed itself to be a fairy… she was enthralled. She wanted to be the one, the princess, who was destined to return to her kingdom in the underworld. In order to return, she was tasked by the faun to fulfill duties set by a magical story book. CAN SHE SUCCEED AND NOT EAT THE ****ing GRAPES?!

Even considering the ****ed up act of eating the godforsaken grapes, Pan’s Labyrinth was a really well written story that satisfy the inner sadist child I have within. Though I felt the background military story was totally un-engaging, I supposed there wasn’t much for Ophelia to do and bounce around merrily for 2 hours. If you see this around and haven’t seen it – give it a shot, I doubt you’d regret watching it!
