Apocalypto (2006)

Two years after making his extremely controversial The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson returned to the scene of directing with Apocalypto. From just the title and bits of preview alone, I gathered the movie was about days after the Apocalypse where everything returned to mother Earth and it’s once again the age of Cavemen ~ boy was I wrong.

Set in the world of Mayan Empire during its height of power, Apocalypto danced in the world that contrasted beauty and brutality. The beauty that was Jaguar Paw’s village, and living at peace within the forest that suddenly changed into unfathomable brutality of slavers and those of Mayan Empire. The insanity that followed, and the aftermath when they saw what was coming on the horizon. It was truly a tale of Apocalypse where their worlds would end one after another.

For the most part, Apocalypto was really a sight to behold and entranced me for quite sometime. There was, however, parts of the film that dragged a bit and I had to admit they could’ve edited it a bit better. Otherwise, the film was really well made and I highly recommend it to anyon… er, no, not kids. After watching this film, we’ve dubbed Mo, Jaguar Paw – in honor of his ability to hunt the forest like a Jaguar =) Hehe!
