Scent of a Woman (1992)
Scent of a Woman is one movie that should not be judged by its cover. I really hadn’t a clue what it was going to be about… and to be honest, I don’t think it’s one of Pacino’s best roles and deserving of Academy Awards.
Charlie Simms was an honor student at a prestigious private high school. Being much poorer than the average student body, he sought out odd jobs instead of going on ski trips during Thanksgiving. Being timid in nature, he was rather shocked when he met the blind army Lt. Colonel Frank Slade who barked orders like a mean doggie. As soon as the family stepped out the door, he was sucked into Frank’s big plan and whisked away to the Big Apple. The plan was so big… Charlie ended up crying.
I wouldn’t say the movie was “great” because I thought Pacino wasn’t really the right person for the role. Being blind but tough was really difficult to act, but Pacino did that rather well ~ however, showing moments of weakness were crucial to the film and Pacino couldn’t come off as “weak.” Another problem with the film is Philip Seymour Hoffman - the guy just… makes all film suck! I hated him in Capote, MI3, and now, this movie. … still it’s a pretty good film, so if you get a chance, check it out.
