A Clockwork Orange (1971)

A year ago at around this time of year, I watched 2001, the most famous work by Kubrick. I hated it. I didn’t understand the movie, and it was just… crap. Total and utter crap. This year, to commemorate the torture that was 2001, I got A Clockwork Orange. To Adam, I say again – your brain is just much bigger than mine, and more apt at understanding shit at a deeper level, cause I don’t get Clockwork, at all. I mean… I understand the movie, but it sucks! It really does suck! I don’t know why people gives it such praise (ranked #57 on IMDb)… it frustrates me to no end to think so badly of the film, when it’s so widely accepted as “good.”

The story of Clockwork began with a young man and his gang, living in a alternative vision of the future. In Kubrick’s future, gangsters dressed up in white jumpsuits, wore frank & bean protectors, drank spiced up milk for high, ran about doing bits of random “ultra-violent,” and talked in a very fucked up fashion. The young man had skirmishes with the law before, and tried to be on top of things – however, due to his selfish acts of power imposition, he was eventually incarcerated in a very fucked up prison system. When our man heard about a way to “make him inherently good” and getting out of prison within a week or two, he strove to be at the spotlight of attention and to be a part of the new “corrective” method. Little did he know, the method would change him forever… ~!

OoOooOo, googly boogly! The idea may be original back in 1971, but presently, its presentation is just stupid at best. Did it really need all the dancing, singing, and nudity for the film to work? It was probably rated so highly back in 1971 due to American’s puritanical nature about sex and violence on media display. However, such is not the case anymore in 2006. The story is just dated and over-the-top by today’s standard and I really can’t stand much of it!

… maybe it would be more relevant and appealing to me had I watched Clockwork in 1971 and haven’t experienced all the movies I’ve already seen. But when I look at The Shawshank Redemption – that’s a movie where I believe a 21 year old in the year 2029 would still appreciate despite its age. Or even Total Recall! At least Arnold kicked some ass ~! Yes, Total Recall is a better movie than A Clockwork Orange. Much better.
