Lecture 18 (08/31/2006 Thursday)
3 hours block of physiology today, and on rather substantial topics. Dr. Levy wasn’t a crazed machine, and didn’t go extremely fast - but still ~ after an hour or two, peoples’ brains tend to shut down a bit, no? But then, the second half was all about review of previous lecture via discussion problems. IDP was the same as the last class with a pretty simple quiz at the beginning of class.
Physiology
- Dr. Levy
- Lecture Notes (read the handouts on CourseInfo)
- Topic: Temporal/Spatial Summation, ANS, Sympathetic, cholinergic, adrenergic metabotropic, ionotropic, varicosities, neurotransmitters, norepinephrine
Summary: As NTs reach the post-synaptic receptors, enough must reach and then summate to create a new action potential at the axon hillock. For this to happen, a variety of things happen. The ANS is split into parasympathetic and sympathetic, and they work together to create the desired outcome in each part of the body. There are different receptors, but the result varies depending on the organ. That’s really about it - read handout for more indepth information.
Intro to Dental Practice
- Dr. Loadholt
- Refer to Power Point on CourseInfo
- Topic: Communicable Diseases, hepatitis, tuberculosis, herpes, HIV, AIDS, etc.
Summary: Dr. Loadholt basically went over all the communicable diseases via the power point presentation.
