Closer (2004)
I believe I watched Closer before - but I didn’t recall that I did when I rented the movie from BPL. I remember the first scene, with the car hitting Natalie Portman, and the trip to the hospital. Strangely, the rest of the movie was new to me - perhaps I fell asleep and never picked up the movie again.
Touted as a romance movie for today’s adult ~ Closer looked into the lives of two couples through flirting, courting, marrying, cheating, breaking, sobbing, and reconciling. There’s nothing special about the portrayal, except it’s realistic. To begin, Dan, a writer, meets Alice through a curious circumstance. Dan likes Alice and tells her so every few hours for a year or two. Then Dan meets Anna. Unfortunately, Dan, like most men, wants to have ménage-à-trois, but can’t manage to propose it without sounding like a total perv, so he does the next best thing: courting Anna while trying to keep Alice in the dark. However, Anna doesn’t play along, and Dan, through a probably now famed online chat scene, introduces Larry into the mix. Larry knows what he wants, and goes after Anna immediately; however, with Dan messing around and trying to get more meat than he can handle at once, all party involved goes through a personal hell.
Dan’s greed, insecurities, and selfishness - may be a bit extreme, but “Dan” happens around the world, especially in developed countries modeling after western world. Closer is not a pleasurable film to watch - it’s hardly humorous, and I feel like I’m watching someone’s secret diary on TV. It simply didn’t do it for me, but I would say it’s slightly better than Holy Grail. Oh, almost forgot! Where’s Padme is very applicable for this film!

I thought this was a very well-acted, and thoughtful film about relationships. I thought the dialogue was awesome, especially from Clive Owen - I almost felt sorry for the poor ba$t%$d after his male fantasies reached the stratosphere!
Overall, a very clever and complex picture. A fearless example of how bad things always happen to bad people!
