A Tale of Furniture Acquisitions
I started looking for furnitures not too long ago. A week I would suppose. It’s been a long road, and I think I got most everything that I/we would need for now.
Bed: It was the simplest thing to get from the girl. I saw the 7/14/06 ad on craigslist, emailed her with my phone number. She responded, I walked down the street and around the corner, saw the Twin (100 w/ mattress + boxspring) and Full (150 w/ mattress + boxspring + frame), put down deposit of 50, and set the date that we’ll pick it up
Easy!
I then waited a week before gathering up more things. When I saw everyone moving out and talking about furnitures, I thought I’ll do the same! So a couple nights ago 7/21/06, I sent out emails after emails asking after items.
Chairs: I saw the ad ~ 15 dollars for office chair, and 10 dollars for contemporary … lawn chair. I sure didn’t know where the hell the guy is, but when I saw it was 1.6 miles, I thought… hell, I can do that! So I went and picked up the chair. The guy offered to drive me home for $15, but I thought.. eh, nothing to do, I can carry two measly chairs for 1.6 miles! So I did! I got the two chairs together, and rolled it past Prudential Center, down Boylston, down Mass Ave, and all the way home while people stopped and stared
It was great!
All the emails I sent to people started with, “I want to buy your [blank]!” and I never bargained. I figure they’re all way below what others are asking and that they did some research on what they can get. So, the responses are generally positive, and I got almost everything I emailed for
Except for a recliner and ottoman.
Kitchen Table: This one, is one that Ricky and I will remember for quite sometimes ^_^ I was in contact with a girl who was selling a set for 100 dollars. Nice table + 4 chairs. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to pull thru for us since she is out of town and I wanted to acquire every piece we need before the 27th. So I found another ad on Craigs — $60 for a tabe + 4 chairs! WOW ! What a deal! After a couple emails, I said that we’ll come check it out IMMEDIATELY! So, I dragged Ricky with me to the T then up to Brookline to where the girl is. The idea was to possibly use Mo’s connection with a mover he contracted for 2 hrs, but that fell thru. After some consideration, I thought: we can do this like I did ! Except, this time, we can ride the T! Heh…
So, after taping down the leafs of the table, I carried it down the stairs while Ricky carried two of the chairs. Initally, I thought to carry the sucker on my back, but after about a block, I decided that’s gonna kill me. So instead, we put the two chairs on the table, and carried it like we were moving it within the house. So, we carried the table for at least 5 blocks over to the T station. When we got on, the train conductor said, “you’re not supposed to carry that on…” We did anyway ~ the last stretch home was really hard, but we found Mo coming home and had him carry the table with one of us. Later that night, I went back to grab the two remaining chairs ~ it was cool to sit down on a wooden chair on the train ~!
Dresser, Nightstand, and Desk: This was really a wonderful coincidence. I responded to two separate ads from the Harvard area. One was to sell dresser and nightstand ($75 total), and the other was for a desk ($20). Initially, I thought I would carry them things from wherever back to the dorm on my back again, using the T. But the girl actually offered to drive them over for a nomial fee of $10! I was in full agreement and it was set up to go! Fortunately, the man with the $20 desk was on the way from Somerville, and she was willing to pick up the desk with me! So, after getting on the T to Harvard Square, I walked over, and saw a fully loaded tiny hatchback (Civic sized). Amazingly we were able to fit the desk in. I carried the nightstand on my lap, with one part of the desk thumping me on the back of my head. Great experience
The girl is a biomedical engineer ~ same as Jon from the COT 06-05! Gave her $20 for her trouble.
TV Stand + Coffee Table: $20 TV stand and $30 Coffee Table from a girl who is just finishing up her residency at Harvard! Very sweet girl who decided she’ll help me out by driving me from BFE back to the dorm as a last minute decision
She had me wait for her at Mass General Hospital, outside CVS for about 30 minutes, but it’s all good ~! I gave her $20 for her trouble as well. What was messed up was while I was waiting, there was this really weird dude (drunk?) that bounced all over the place with a girl towing him. He was falling over and grabbing onto people like he was drunk… went past me and kept going. Moments later, cop showed up asking after the drunken and disorderly guy. A few minutes after the cop left, the dude came back around to the other side, and one of the street hawkers told him that the cops are looking for him. He immediately straighten out, and ran off!
I said to myself, “wtf.”
So far, I’ve spent 150+15+10+20+75+20+20+20+10+20 = $360 ! Excluding T-station fares.

Awesome. Sounds like you are having a blast. I should go back to college too!
