Doom (2005)
I started in the world of first person shooters like most other old gamers out there, with Wolfenstein 3D. When Po and I discovered networking with Doom, it became a whole new world! We visited a local bullentin board system, Combat Zone was it? I don’t recall… but there, we met and played deathmatch Doom over dial-up modem! I used to be really good too - could kick everyone’s ass except for someone named Sim(?) and his buddy. Anyway, time changes, and the world of FPS became more and more complex up until today, with Unreal, Quake, etc ~
When the movie Doom was announced, I wasn’t all that excited about it since the track record for game-to-movie sucked horribly. It simply didn’t make the “must-see” list. A couple nights ago, Po was gracious enough to watch the gore fest with me… sorta.
The story is very simple ~ research gone awry, and team of marine must go in and to do search & rescue. Of course, poop hits the fan soon, and everyone starts to die soon enough.
Graphically, Doom wasn’t exactly impressive. The monsters all twirled in happy low light conditions, and they might’ve well been men in shiny gel suits. Where were the really impressive monsters that I remember from Doom?! PHOOEY! They never actually mentioned hell, just genetic mutation nonsense… bastards.
Anyway, Doom is sufficiently entertaining ~ mindless fun, I would call it =) Something to watch if you have nothing else better on the list! Don’t try to hype it, and you’ll enjoy the silly ride.
