Lonesome Dove (1989)
I started reading the book quite a few months ago and had the miniseries on queue after Linda mentioned it to me. The DVD didn’t come for the longest time because I just had “L Words” hanging around the house doing nothin. Lonesome Dove is a rather famous novel by Larry McMurtry, and the TV miniserie follows the story quite closely.
In case you didn’t know, Lonesome Dove is an epic story following two former Texas Rangers who after 10 years of lazing about, decided to cast off toward the unknown lands of Montana, 2500 miles north of where they are. It’s an adventure story, mixed with romance, and the occasional heroics. The characters are everything in this story and the miniseries feature an all-star cast of Diane Lane, Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Duvall, Danny Glover, and many others.
Going into the first part of god knows how many more, I know it’s from the TV back in 1989 so I shouldn’t expect too much in all the departments the audience come to expect nowadays ~ but dang… I never seen such poorly done special effects! But the question is, why is there any to begin with?! It’s not a sci-fi movie for sure! It’s a western! The acting ~ well, I think the scripts are just poorly written and didn’t flow very well, but the actors made do, so that’s okay. The story ~ it just started, so I can’t really comment.
The only good thing about the whole first part is seeing Diane Lane from 17 years ago. We all know she is a fine looking 40 year old woman, so how did she look back then? Since I can’t find a good picture, here’s a crappy screenshot ~ other than the screenshot, I’ll say she looks just as good as any sexy seductress on the big screen nowadays. So that’s about it - no more Lonesome Dove for me until tomorrow, can only take so much western in a single day.
