North Country (2005)
North Country , nominated for Oscar for best actress, poses as a sharp contrast against Æon Flux in terms of Theron’s flexibility. Comparable to Monster, North Country is based on real events of Jenson vs Eveleth Mines that took place not that long ago.
North Country is a moving film even if the events unfold without many elements of surprise. Theron plays Josey Aimes, a beaten mother of two escaping her husband into Minnesota. In order to fend for herself, a friend introduced her to a job within a mining facility. There, Josey is met with hostility and incredible amount of sexual harrassment due to her sex — but unlike her submissive coworkers, she decided to break the rank and stand up for herself.
Beautiful cinematography, amazing performances, good screenplay, and evil men who lies (a lot) — the film has a lot going for it. The only problem I have is with the beginning and the interchange between the present and the past. Other than that, I would have to say Theron is the one making this film shine brighter than similiar movies like GI Jane. There’s not much more I want to say about the movie — again, highly recommended from me =)
And damnit bro, watch Million Dollar Baby already!

1) I wish Josey was smarter and got some more hard evidence on their abuse… ie, hidden camera, tape recorders, anything!
2) Mob mentality is just… UGH! To watch one person (Bobby), making an entire crowd into dumb mumbling idiots who can’t stand up for what’s right!
3) I cried when Josey’s dad finally stood up for her. And again when Glory banged on her chair and Kyle spoke her,
“My name is Glory Dodge and I’m not fucking dead yet. I stand with Josey.”
4) I thought Bobby was in cahoots with the teacher in Josey’s rape… it’s actually one of the downfall of the film — Bobby pulling decency out of his ass was kind of unbelievable. I hate the fucker. And Earl too!
5) Did Charlize Theron decided to do Æon so people won’t forget she is still a sexy beast?!
