Shinobi (2005)

I loved Basilisk, the anime. I loved Basilisk, the manga. Basilisk, the movie on the big screen with actors with questionable make up and weird beard stubbles, did not come across nicely however. The concept certainly should work - two star crossed lovers each born in the opposite blood feuding ninja clan. Like the anime, we got Oboro, Gennosuke, and various other ninjas - but unfortunately, with the below average CG, weird costumes, and lack of character development, Shinobi wasn’t an enjoyable experience.

The story changed somewhat, from the anime to the movie. To fit into the time slot, instead of 10 ninjas from each clan, only 5. Instead of elaborate attacks and tactics, we get simplified killings and very randomized. And the story… the subtle love inferences, were all gone. They love each other, but for some reason, Oboro is bent on killing in order to shoulder her responsibilities. She didn’t even question it like Gennosuke did.

Ahh, no time to really write anything more, but I guess it’s a B-rated movie from start to finish. Not really worth looking into.

agreed. I’m also a fan of the manga, anime, and book. Shinobi was a horrible experience. I wanted to enjoy it, but they may as well have called it “Gone Woth The Wind”, because it had about as much in common with that movie as it did with the Koga Ninja Scrolls/Basilisk.
