Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain (2001)
Nowadays, it’s rare to see a film involving the audience directly with the actors SPEAKING to them. Amélie is such a film and from the getgo, the atmosphere feels totally different! Chronicling the life of Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou), Amélie starts off as a precocious home-schooled child sheltered from her surroundings due to her father’s inaccurate prognosis of tachycardia. Not knowing friends and reality of life, she grew up to be an introvert and disdained almost everything. One day, in her little apartment, she discovered a childhood treasure box of over 25? years ago. Wondering what value the treasure box will have on the owner, she sets out to find and return it back to him. Amélie decided then, that this will be the determining reason for the path her life will take.
Amélie is really a great film to watch with Audrey Tautou as the leading lady. I don’t think I’d be half as interested if it was anyone else. Audrey literally lit up the screen with her incredibly expressive eyes during each and every scene. The main story focuses on the Amélie meeting with a boy and falling in love, but all the side stories are wonderfully done as well. The crazy stalker guy and the girls working behind the counter, Santa’s elve taking a round trip around the world, and pranks played on a mean market owner ~ each of these little side activities by Amélie are just full of energy and fun to watch.
