Lab 06
Almost at the half way mark of the course! Yahoo! Just think, 6 more weeks, and I won’t have to get up at 6:00 am anymore! WOWSERS!
Today’s lab was much more complex than last week – we synthesized methyl orange! A dye made by us from the ground up. Well, it’s not really difficult – but there were a lot of steps to do -
1) Prepare a basic solution to add the sulfanilic acid into, and then cool in water bath.
2) Add sodium nitrite.
3) Add hydrochloric acid, and watch the diazonium salt form!
4) Couple the diazonium salt with N-N-dimethylaniline.
5) By adding NaOH, we get the final product (need to be filtered and recrystalized tho)
