Another fun and exciting lab! We learned two more differential staining methods today - the Schaeffer-fulton method (Endospore stain) and the Ziehl-Neelsen Method (acid-fast staining). We also did a gram stain mix culture of E. Coli and Stapholococcus aureus.
The Schaeffer-Fulton Method will be used to stain
1) Bacillus cereus (rod shape = bacillus) - […]

The man doesn’t waste any time… and no one seem to want to ask any questions! Oh well..
Lecture Notes
Summary:
The focus today was on protein once again. A quick overview of the primary, secondary, tertiary structures and what each meant. We then went back to the amino acids — with its characterization, reactions, […]

Dr White returns today, and it makes a huge difference ~ listening to a practiced lecturer versus someone filling in.
Lecture Notes
Summary:
We went in depth into the classifications of bacteria from Haeckle’s generalized protista, to Whittaker’s 5 kingdoms, and finally to Woese’s 3 domains. I think we’d mainly use Woese’s classification methods, since Dr White […]

Let’s make a quick note here - Dr Morgan does not know how to say carboxylic acid. Nor does she know the that carbonyl encompass both aldehyde AND ketone. Sure, you lack sleep and is tired - but according to a fellow student, he can say carboxylic acid in his sleep.
Lecture Notes
Summary:
We started […]

Today in lab, we went back over the basic principles of probabilities, and then went into Chi square calculations. It’s a very basic formula - basically you have your classes of results that sum up to the total. You have the observed, and the expected. Subtract expected from observed, take the square […]

I went and shadowed Dr B earlier today from 8 till 12. He performed a bridge (step 1 of it), and CEREC. I wanted to stay for the implant, but the dang genetic lab stood in the way!

Today, we learned about 1) Smear (liquid and solid) 2) Simple Stain and 3) Gram Stain
All the different stains start with a smear - the procedure is simple - take whatever bacteria, put on slide, wait till it’s dry, then heat fix it. Simple Stain is only using one single dye (we used Crystal […]

We had a quiz today. The question was simple, but difficult to do if you can’t remember amino acids and how the Fischer projection works out. Draw the 4 stereoisomers of L-Aspartyl-L-Phenylalaninyl-methyl-ester

Lecture Notes
It’s really hard to focus on the topics - he jumps all over the place and the focus doesn’t seem to be important. Didn’t take a lot of notes today, just general overview. The man puts the textbook on the dot cam, so — what am I gonna do with that?
Summary:
We went […]

Lecture Notes
Summary:
We went over in detail, the pH controlling mechanisms within the body today. Three distinct systems - 1) Blood Buffer 2) Respiratory 3) Kidney. Blood buffer is the quickest to respond, and utilizes the bicarbonic acid buffer system to bind to H+ or release H+, depending on the detectors. The […]

I didn’t think it was possible that I’d have any fun this weekend with the scheduling of 5 experiments over the weekend, but I had a sample of it last night. Can’t remember the last time I met up with Rob, Nelson, and Dave — must been a while (before I started the blog […]

The Brothers Grimm (2005) opened this past Friday starring Matt Daemon and Heath Ledger. It’s a fairytale story, set in some pretty realistic settings - so real, that it’s easy to forget the fairy aspect as you’re watching. To begin the story off, Little Girl Grimm was dying of a terrible sickness, and […]
